Orional's
Tactics: Nationalists |
|
INTRODUCTION |
Nationalists: These guys are the economists plain and simple. When in
team play it is the job of the other factions to protect you till mid
game and keep those rushes off you. If they are successful by mid-game
they will rewarded for their efforts. The nationalist (if left alone) by
mid-game can create the single most powerful force on the battlefield.
(note: most powerful force does not guarantee victory. there are many
tactics to be used by others to break down your empire)
I will go into the units and their uses shortly. It is crucial that
you remember when playing nationalists that you have to go the economy
route or the other factions will muscle you out. You are the so called
"rabbit" of the factions, you must multiply quickly and make many towns.
have a settler going as much as possible. I've seen nat players go with
different build strategies mixing econ and production and I have seen
both used well. However I'm going into tactics on this thread.
|
|
STRENGTHS |
Extra component slot in buildings, 20% increase in
supply ranges of settlements, Zealot (I know this isn't a specific
ability even though it is a specific unit of nats... but it is arguably
one of the toughest support units in the game)
|
|
WEAKNESSES |
As with the council faction they have only 1 company
limit to a village, 25% more expensive upgrade costs to next settlement
level
|
|
GAMEPLAY |
At the start of the game do not upgrade your village.
keep pumping out those settlers and spread out over the map. Use the two
components in each village to build a strong economy (I know I'm going
into building strategy but with nats that is half the game for them.
working up an economy).
If you chose to you can use one component for economy and one for troop
upkeep its up to you. not every map allows you to sit back and build.

|
UNITS |
You need to realize that you cannot field the amount
of units that ceyah or the royals can field (unless you happen to get
indies or trade cities) SO. you will have to make your army as powerful
as possible with your fewer company slots. With your extra slots start
building towns where you can put mana producing items along with iron to
support your troops.
--
With your extra economy and ability to support stronger troops a good
combo is always Infantry with zealots. This seems to be the mainstream
combo and truthfully it works well.
--
Another combo to use is footmen with dual summoners. This is a cheap
company that can be used to put pressure on other fronts as your main
force hits the general battle field. If used properly you can micro
these companies to send a couple waves of elementals into the enemy
softening them up.
--
One thing when using Nationalist you have to remember is that your power
troops are slow! (elites, zealots w/Infantry or grenadiers) So you have
to be on constant vigilance of raiding forces. You can hammer them in a
straight up fight but if they get behind your lines there's a lot of
damage that they can do. The best counter to this is footmen, engineers
and dragoons. Don't leave your booming economy unprotected or you WILL
regret it with many veteran players. Cavs and void beasts will pound
your footmen, engineers, and dragoons into submission there is no doubt
of this. The idea is not to stop them because you wont. The idea is to
hurt them enough that either your main force can get back (I suggest
this only if you are near), or that when they do go to take a city they
will have to spend their time healing before moving on. Giving you
enough time to recruit fresh forces to face them.
--
Also a good idea when using nats in team play is to feed your royalist
and ceyah partners money. Make them USE all their extra company slots.
Trust me this will take a lot of pressure off you and if they have half
a mind they will hit the enemy on every front possible.
--
Along with your zealot armies I suggest putting clerics and maybe a
summoner or two mixed in. Clerics will keep your armies moving and
summoners will give you needed recon (larger line of sight) to protect
your turtle force.
--
Solo play: I suggest for solo play that you balance economy and
production. Use one slot for economy and one for producing recourses
needed for troops. Keep the opposition busy with fodder troops until you
can support the big guns.
--
Elite guards: these guys are tough and hard to stop once they get going.
REMEMBER you CAN have elites with only one upgrade. I hear a lot of
people whining about the nationalists upgrade costs but most fail to
realize that with one 200 gold upgrade the nationalist has the ability
to field elite units. USE this when you can support them!
|
|
CONCLUSION |
Well that's it for now. feel free to comment again and
add any tactic you might have. Remember that the nationalist is used
best as a slow wrecking ball that works its way into the enemy's
territory and wreaks havoc with superior forces. They are not best used
as a raiding faction and its best to have a teammate (or the cunning use
of outposts) to protect your open economic empire.
As usual I hope you benefit from this and feel free to join any FM games
and ask any questions that you might have. Good luck.

LORD HAVOC: |
I have found that those outposts are a great
multiplier for the nats...since they only require the stone for upkeep,
and as a nat you should have an econ of 130+ easy and early in the
game...having negative 40 stone or more isn't that big a deal. You use
these outposts to create a rock in the front lines that the enemy has an
extremely hard time breaking. When they move to flank you, your
teammates are there waiting or it allows your teammates to push as hard
as they can knowing that they have a front base nearby.
Since you can't field as many units as the royals/ceyah, having these
outposts, and walking them towards the enemy is very effective. It can
also allow you to choke off a players expansion. I learned this the hard
way in a game against Out4Blood. He didn't have squat for forces, but he
put one of those 8 outpost rocks in a very inconvenient area for us and
it allowed his team to control our expansion and they now controlled the
middle of the board.
