AI Sets by Keith John Ness |
Added |
These sets can be played with other
sets or by themselves. Note that, whenever you alter the SAI directory,
you should leave default.ini and vssver.scc alone, and campaign play may
be disturbed if other profiles that came with the game are not in the SAI
directory.
With these sets, I take advantage of the ability to give
different profiles the same name, giving each of my profiles an anonymous
'twin' that shows up as '?' in the game. This adds a stimulating amount
of uncertainty to 'Random AI'. Also, their politics are radically tougher
than those that came with the game, so feel free to turn diplomacy back on
and enjoy! Note that, if you play with politics on and mix my sets with
sets that have easy politics, those with easy politics will probably gang
up on mine (though one of mine could still probably beat up to three of
the profiles that came with the game, even after they ally against my
profile in a diplomatic free-for-all). -

Age of Wer
Download
Fileplanet
618 KB |
The 48 profiles of the Age of Wer are very strong for
general purpose play on maps in the 96x96 to 192x192 size range. One of
their weaknesses is that, for some of them, elites were de-prioritized, as
I thought I would never play with elites on, and was worried that elite
priorities influenced AI behavior undesirably whether elites were
available or not. This was a reasonable decision at the time, since I
think elites have always been too easy to acquire or too powerful,
overshadowing most of the interesting strategic elements and units of the
game with brute force. However, TimeGate may fix elites in the future,
and I now think elite priority does not influence behavior if elites are
not available. Another weakness of these profiles is that the
factionalist profiles are so dedicated to their own cause that they will
probably have difficulty producing front line troops to start if the
player chooses a non-Ceyah faction for a Ceyah factionalist, or
vice-versa. On the other hand, left to their own factions, these
factionalists add a lot of character to the game. I simply never
considered the factor of choosing factions, since I never choose factions
for AI when I play.

Iural Times
Download
Fileplanet
87.1 KB |
Iural Times profiles were made with
much experience in profile editing behind me, allowing for much more user
flexibility, such as elite support across the board, factionalists who
will build basic front line and elite troops of any faction (but advanced
troops (non-elites that require more than 1 building) only of their own
faction), and strong playing on the larger map sizes (they avoid the
slowest units a little more). While they support elites well enough, they
should usually build them later than they could. This is to protect their
effectiveness in games without elites, which I prefer. However, these
profiles may create enough early pressure to give you difficulty getting
to elites before they do in many situations, regardless. Game-play wise,
they tend to attack a little earlier and more aggressively, and are
tailored to their own factions a little more individually. Their files
are also much trimmer and cleaner.

The Collectives
Download
Fileplanet
29.7 KB |
The Collectives were actually my first attempts at good
SAI profiles based on the limitations of the SAI. Their strength is on
160 x 160 maps with 5 or fewer players (or larger maps, or fewer players),
in which you will want to avoid so much as running a settler through their
territory during the first 45 minutes of the game. On the smaller maps,
they tend to not have enough room to settle (unless there are much fewer
players), and do poorly. They also tend to rely on opponents intruding
their territory to bring them onto the offensive. But if they've had
enough room to settle and they are intruded on, their response is unique
and impressive. They are also unusually resilient, capable of losing a
lot of ground and armies, rebuilding their armies quickly and regaining
ground dramatically. They do unexpectedly well in the late game versus
other AI, despite the fact they rely mostly on short companies.
