July 31, 2001

New to the Strategy Section, we have Void's Tactics: Sun Tzu applied to Kohan.  These are an excellent read.  Check out Laying Plans and Waging War.  More to come later.

From The Adrenaline Vault:

Strategy First announced today that it would attend the Gen Con Game Fair in Milwaukee, Wisc., Aug. 2-5, to “talk to the players one on one.” The game publisher will be showcasing three upcoming titles, including O.R.B, Disciples II: Dark Prophecy and the follow up title to Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns, Kohan: Ahriman's Gift. Other titles that may make an appearance are Patrician II and Rails Across America. People can obtain more information about the fair on the official Gen Con website.

If you are going to the Con and would like to play reporter for The Awakening, please drop me a line :)

July 30, 2001

Great new map by The Simbul: Ahriman's Revenge, a 2v2v2vAhriman battle of epic proportions.

July 27, 2001

Started making changes to the site to reflect the 1.1.0 patch:

Added 75% magic resistance support bonus to Sorceress, removed bravery
Added Cavalry Foe +3 to Footman Militia
Footmen now have Cavalry Foe +5 instead of +3
Shohn Maht's description is now complete
Added +6 Reverse Damage to Lazarus at Enlightened

Most changes will be reflected in the next version of the Reference Screens and I'll finish up "patching" the site this weekend.

Shar Lon Part VI by Kjellon has been added to the Fan Fiction section.  If you like what's been written, how about some feedback in the forums?

And to the Fan Fiction section, I have added Part III: Rebirth of Cediena's tale (The Awakening) by Chimaeros (that would be me).  Hope you all enjoy it :)

The screenshot I had up for the past week or so has been moved to the humor section and is the first of a series of "Kohan: At the Movies" cartoons.  If you have an idea or even made one send it along :)

We've got another new map by ReLLiK: Project_DESTRUCTION

You must destroy Ahriman's Citadel.  Only as a team will you succeed the vast challenges that await you.  From spider nests to dragon lairs you must fight.  Defeat these, then defeat Ahriman.

Oh, and Happy Birthday, ReLLiK :)

Congratulations to Team Viagra for winning the Royal Rumble Tournament!  I could make some comment about them really getting up for the game, but that's such an obvious joke... :)

July 24, 2001

More Shar Lon from Kjellon: Shar Lon Part V.

Got another track of Kohan music...if anyone knows the actual title of these things, let me know :)  For now, I shall call it mini...er, I mean, Song 3.

July 22, 2001

We've got a couple of new stories from Kjellon: Shar Lon Part IV and Thief's Demise.  Thief's Demise is not Kohan related, but it did win Kjellon the European Writers Association (EWA) Award for best fantasy short.  Not too shabby :)

Uploaded a revised version of The Last Battle map by ReLLiK--I believe a few triggers were fixed.  Should work better now.

The 1.1.0 patch is now available on Adrenaline Vault.  This site also has the Kohan cheats listed, if you are interested in that sort of thing. ;)

I am in the process of recording the game music into .mp3's--here are the first two.
July 20, 2001

If you are having trouble downloading the patch from Kohan.net and FilePlanet, I have put up a mirror here on this site:

Kohan_1.1.0_From_1.0.7
Kohan_1.1.0_From_1.0.9

July 19, 2001

Looks like there is a new patch, 1.0.1...haven't been able to load up the Kohan site.  Probably swamped ;)  You will have better luck on FilePlanet, I suspect.  There is a new version of the autopatcher as well.

Anyway, version.txt here
press release here
Patch itself here

or from FilePlanet:
Kohan_1.1.0_From_1.0.2

Kohan_1.1.0_From_1.0.7
Kohan_1.1.0_From_1.0.9

Reverse Patch:
Kohan_1.0.9_From_1.1.0

Included in the patch:
GameSpy Chat to the connection interface
Ability to ban players
Climate options to random map generator
Retreat/Rout buttons to the regiment interface
New art for the Dreadlord and Paladin
Auto detection of new versions and auto download of patches
Support for official expansions and mods
Changes pressed move so that the company reverts to column move instead of stopping
Improves the SAI player
Fixes some exploits

Have another new film called "betaboy"...I assume this wont work with the new patch.  I'll check.
Oh, and if you submit a film, and would like to add some background or a synopsis--I'll post it.
July 18, 2001

By popular demand, Tireanna has a new map tutorial: Dead Dragons Die.  Learn how to make a dragon lair disappear upon slaying the dragon.  Just a quick note, these tutorials, though specific in topic are helpful in a general way as well.

Posted a new film...this one should probably have a parental warning on it...
Oh, and if you have never seen a shadeling swarm, prepare yourself.

GameRankings.com has several user reviews--the majority of which are positive ranging from 6 to 10 out of 10.  (Average 8)  They have a nice little price watch feature if you are still looking for the game.

July 17, 2001

Got a new film, submitted by Void showing Clan Ronin in action.

ReLLiK has released his first map, a nice 96x96 one called The Last Battle.  He makes good use of spires--if you are still unsure on how to make spell flinging spires, be sure to check this out.

Looks like after a rough weekend, the Forums are back up.

July 15, 2001

Sorry about the lack of an update yesterday--some technical difficulties.

Tireanna has provided the first Editing tutorial--should be a big help for those of you (like me) who are easily confused with the triggers--I always forget to make them "global."  Get ready to learn how to make your Khaldunite Spires Fire.

Lichgod has submitted a map known as...The Maw.  Careful on this one, it can be rough.  Beasts roam the land freely and often.  Nothing like having your scouts destroyed by spiders because they've been webbed.  Great map and challenging start configuration.

The Maw

Just a quick reminder that The Awakening has brand new forums, including places to discuss strategy and editing maps and AI.  Even a place for us would be writers.  :)

July 13, 2001

I've got BRAND NEW FORUMS!!!  Please stop by and check them out--I am really excited about them--lots of cool features.  I am still working on the logo graphics, but the Forum works fine.  You might even recognize the avatars...

If your clan needs a forum, let me know.

Lexander submitted a must-read treatise on defense.  I strongly recommend checking this out:

"Kohan is a game that rewards good thinking, and the best games of Kohan are those between players of a certain level of skill. Unfortunately, many people will play game after game of Kohan without improving, and will be shutout of not only the opportunity to play with certain players, but will never see the joy of a well executed plan. It is my goal to be a catalyst for the overall improvement of play in Kohan."

Lexander's Theory of Defense

Our friends at TimeGate Studios are holding a new contest: submit a screenshot to featured@timegatestudios.com, win a Kohan T-Shirt.  They will be featuring each screenshot submitted, one a week, but there can only be one...winner, that is.  Info is on the main Kohan.net page.  The T-Shirt is very cool by the way...nice quality, 100% cotton, Kohan logo on front with a nice big pic on the back of some of your favorite heroes.

Updated the links to the following clans: Dragion and Delphorian Venge League, as well as adding the new Ronin Clan.  If you would like your clan listed, please fill out the Clan Database Form

July 12, 2001

Gamer's Pulse gives Kohan the "Silver Heart" Award, with a review of 88%--not too shabby:

"A solid overall first effort for first time developer TimeGate Studios that actually manages to break interesting ground in real time strategy."

My last poll asked what you played when not playing Kohan--you surprised me:

1.)  enjoy other strategy games. 67   26%
2.)  play first person shooters. 40   16%
3.)  play RPG's. 65   25%
4.)  enjoy playing adventure games 13   5%
5.)  play sports games 7   3%
6.)  feel empty and unfulfilled. 63   25%

I did not expect the significant number of RPGers :)  Now I am curious: How old are you?

I would like to officially welcome the first staff member to The Awakening: Tireanna.  It will be nice to have someone else around here :)  Never realized how much time it takes to maintain a website--thanks Tireanna for offering to help out.  One of these days I will add a "Staff" page which will include any "job openings" (ie. volunteer spots) :)

July 10, 2001

The GameAssault Kohan contest is over.  Congrats to Will Azada of Maryville, TN who won a Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns t-shirt.

The July contest is for a Playstation insulated mug, if you are so inclined.

Kohan.net has a new poll: Which creature would you most like to be able to play as a unit? Head on over and vote for your favorite--so far it looks like the Storm Drake and Simurgh are in the lead.  Mmmmm....dragons....

There's a great thread started by Peberr on the official boards:
200 ways to know you play too much kohan
At 101 and counting...

W00t!  Kohan won the "Game of the 1/2 Year" poll over at GameRankings with a decent 36%, beating out a bunch of console games in the final.  Pfft, like that would ever be a fair contest :)

July 9, 2001

I've added three new pages to the Strategy section:

Lexander's Tactics: Teamwork, A Combat Analysis
Lexander's Tactics: Teamwork, A Non-Combat Analysis
Orional's Tactics: Royalists

Version 1.6 of the Reference screens are up (Word only)--some minor changes, fixed some (MP), (S), (PS) designations, fixed Sadira's (Nationalist) Awakened stat for Defense, and added the summoned Undead to the Ceyah screen.  They are available separately or in an all-in-one zip file.

If you are interested in something admittedly...well, bizarre...check out the small flash animation on the Korean version of the official Kohan page.  Never thought I would see Kohan anime-ized...

I believe there is also a preview in Korean as well on Gamania.Net, if you are interested.

July 4, 2001

Part III of Shar Lon, by Kjellon is up and ready for your reading pleasure.

Game Rankings has a "game of the 1/2 year" poll, ranking games that have been released so far this year.  Head on over and vote for that hot, new RTS game...now what was it called...

I forgot to mention that the Kohan demo is on the August Computer Gaming World CD...so, if for some reason you have not rushed out to buy the game and don't have the fastest of connections, you can get the demo as well as the mini-strat guide I mentioned on the 27th of June.  This would also be the suggested route if you had no internet connection at all. ;)

July 3, 2001

Got an awesome new map by Zeke McCanless: War Gods.  I was playing the single player scenario last night...I don't think I have ever seen such a brutal and bloody fight.  Tight choke points make for natural defensive positions--and trying to break through can be costly.

Kjellon does it again...with part 2 of Shar Lon.  If you haven't read any of her work yet...what's wrong with you!?!  Go.  Now.  Read.
