REVIEW: The July issue of Computer Gaming World gives Kohan 4/5 Stars:

"Strategy First and TimeGate Studios have done the unthinkable:  They've made a real-time strategy game that plays like a turn-based game.  This might seem unpromising, but in KOHAN: IMMORTAL SOVEREIGNS, the mixture is surprisingly fun and innovative."-Elliott Chin

Just about the only thing they didn't like was the campaign, saying it "can get boring at times."

Thorz has sent in an update to Thorz's World--some minor changes and the addition of Dread, Iggy, and Jezebel AI's.

If you have a clan that is recruiting, let me know and I will be glad to post it (also, if you want me to link to you, let me know that as well).
May 30, 2001

Got a new map by Thorz, Thorz's World, a 192x192, 4 Kingdom battlefest.
UPDATE: Fixed link and screenshot--sorry about that :)

The Acrobat version of the Royalist Reference Screen is up!

Reworked the menu to the left, compacting it a bit--and moved things around on the right.  Until I get it just the way I want it, it may change again :) (picky picky picky)

Moved Denizens into the Units section.

The Forums are now setup--post post post!

StrategyPlanet has posted the chat log from the last Dev Chat on GameSpy Arcade:

"Denis Papp (Barnabas), Lead Programmer; Mathew Herman (Ja`leel), Associate Producer; and Adel Chaveleh (Adellon), Producer from TimeGate Studios dropped by GameSpy Arcade to chat with fans about their real-time strategy game, Kohan."

Thank you to StrategyPlanet for Hosting this site!
I feel like a kid in a candy store...a virgin on prom night...a...<insert stupid cliché here>...you get the idea. :)

Thorz sent in an updated version of After the Deluge. Head on over to the Maps section to snag it.  In the words of Thorz:

"The original was way too easy to beat if you got the Haroun villages under
your control.  So, I updated the map, add a few Gauri Strongholds, a few
Drauga villages and changed the AI,  fixed the factions in the player
settings so they would build the right cities and now I think this is a tough
map...I also added a gold mine under each player control since the AI
doesn't seem to handle a negative economy very well.  Economies still
generally start out around -3 to -5 and the AI is handling it ok.  These
measures have considerably added to the difficulty of the map and all sides
start out more or less even."

I have an update on two of the maps I posted yesterday, as well as a new one by the same author, Thorz.   These are excellent maps btw.  I have created a Maps section to better showcase the work done.

Added the Adobe Acrobat version of the Nationalist Screen to the Download page.

May 24, 2001

Kohan Reference Screens v1.5 for all factions (Word 97 .doc) are available to download as well as an Adobe Acrobat version of the Council Faction.  A lot of additions and tightened up the formatting.  Thanks to John Messinger for the .pdf conversions.

For those of you awaiting Kohan for Linux, Loki Games shows a preview available on their site--not having Linux, I can't confirm this.  Tux Games has an estimated (and unconfirmed) release date of July 1.

There is an interview with Steve Hemmesch of TimeGate Studios on Threshed.com.  I can't tell when this was done...
Over at EBGames, Kohan has an overall customer rating of 5 stars (6 reviews, all 5 stars)!
Added three maps to download: Desert Heart v3, Middle Earth, and Shannara.
If you are interested in helping out on the site, whether it be as a newsie, strategy writer, or anything else--I could use someone proficient in banner creation as well--send off a quick email telling me what you would like to do.

May 23, 2001

Got something new in the Download section: Istvan Albert's Kohan Battlefield Calculator.

This program allows you to set up a mock battle between two companies to see who might win. More info is on the Download page.

Update-When Typos Attack!:  Normally, typos just make things hard to read.  But sometimes they change the meaning of a sentence.  Check out my little gem below :) (last entry) LOL, you know what I meant, of course.

Fate of Those Who Cross the Darkmaster (new entries by Helmsman and Rako added)
Message to Darkmaster's Servant, freezone! (new story by WhiteSkull)
The Exodus (new story by Guest)

  • The updated screens are almost done, they are being converted to .pdf format.

I am now accepting map and AI submissions (in addition to just about anything else)--not films as of yet though.  Like everything else, email them along :)

May 18, 2001

Morning Update:  If you are having trouble printing out the reference screens, please let me know where the problem is...left/right margins, top/bottom...so I can adjust them accordingly.  The Council and Royalist v1.1 was kind of a quick fix, but I am still working on tightening them up.  The Nationalist (not yet released) is looking a lot better, and I have reduced the file size considerably as well as tightening up the tables (bigger margins).

May 16, 2001

Moved Roxanna Javidan and Garadune Payne from Council to Royalist.  Updated the Royalist and Council Screens to v1.1 (reflecting the 1.0.9 patch).  I am working on adding more information to the next version.  If you have any requests, send them in.

Also, a big thank you to TimeGate Studios for honoring The Awakening on the official Kohan site, I am extremely grateful.  Thank you for making such a great game and thank you to all those who have e-mailed support and suggestions! :)

May 15, 2001

I forgot to adjust the screens for the 1.0.9 patch which changed a couple of spells and moved two heroes. I'll have v1.1 of the screens up later today.

If you are having trouble printing them--sides getting cut off and such--pull the margins in. An easy way to check (in Word 97 anyway) is to do a print preview. If everything appears then you should be able to print with no problem. Sorry for that, but I wanted to contain them to three pages each, so I had to cram a lot of info into a small space.  I will try to make the screens tighter for v1.1

May 14, 2001

Well, I decided I didn't want to wait any longer to post these.  I have given credit where credit is due (all I needed was the spell data).  So, what is this "big thing" I have been toiling away on?

FACTION REFERENCE SCREENS

Three pages for each faction that you can print out, slap on some cardboard, and voila - instant reference screen (like a dungeon master's screen).  Just about anything and everything you need to know about your faction is on these sheets--from hero data to city upgrade costs.  The files are in Word 97 format and you may need to adjust them to your printer but they are easily customizable.

May 13, 2001

There's a new poll up on CV GameDev asking "What's the Best NEW PC Game On the Shelves Right Now?"  Head on over and vote for Kohan!  "The site itself is aimed towards game developers of any level of experience, and focuses mostly on groups based in Virginia (although anyone is welcome there, of course)."

By popular demand, I have added a Strategy Section--bare bones at the moment, and probably nothing you haven't seen before.  As always, submissions are welcome.

Also added a new wallpaper: Kohan Dawn

May 11, 2001

I have something big in the works, no not a life size model of Lyssa Edan...hmm.  I am waiting on an e-mail reply (basically asked to use info someone else gathered) and if I get an okay, I'll be able to post something that hopefully you all will find useful.  How's that for vague? :)

May 9, 2001

Patch 1.09 is out with numerous fixes--see www.kohan.net for details.  Added a new toon: The Rush

KOHAN REVIEW: 9/10

Who wants to live forever? ESC Magazine reviewer Garret Romaine says as long as we're on this Earth, we should play Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns, an excellent mix of RPG and RTS. Find out more, and share your thoughts in the forums.

Posted a few more stories originally found on the official message boards--these by Kalisari, freezone, and Omnipotent.

Don't you hate it when you email someone and they never respond?  I do...so, again, sorry to all of you that wrote to me last week.  As I mentioned on the 28th, I was unable to update the site and check email.

Nothing big today, just a simple desktop background.  Also added a printer friendly - text only version of the Ceyah Heroes (see the bottom of the Ceyah Heroes page).  I will be doing this for all heroes and units.

April 28, 2001

Big update today!  All support units and militia added.  Couple more creatures in the Denizens.  Should be just about everything in the game--if I missed something, please let me know.  Another toon, 2001: A Kohan Odyssey added to the new "Humor" section as well as the "Not So Serious Strategy Tips" (what I call Advanced Strategies) transposed from the official message board.  And finally, Part 2 of "The Awakening" in Fan Fiction.

By the way, it is unlikely that I will be able to update the site this coming week--nor will I be able to respond to emails, so please don't think I am being rude :)  I will respond when I have the chance.  Enjoy the new content, I hope you like it :)

April 26, 2001

Morning Update: Added Avatar (Support), Channeler, Cleric, Conjuror (Mages & Priests).

April 25, 2001

Going to be a little slow on updates today--had a little accident last night and cut up my hand "real good."  Ouch.  Anyway, added Archmage and Battle Priest in the Unit--Mages & Priests section as well as adding the entire, HUGE, specialty unit section (two whole units).  Part 2 of "The Awakening" is coming along now that I am done adding heroes--expect it before the week is out.

Again, if any of you have any stories, battle accounts, anecdotes, whatever, please send them along.

April 24, 2001

Cavalry has been added to the Units section.  Added Shadow Lord and Storm Drake to Denizens--nasty creatures.

April 22, 2001

Fixed stats for Sar Lashkar, Eben Baruch, and Lyssa Edan.  Also added rank adjusted stats for Ceyah and Council Heroes.  Nationalist and Royalist will be up later today.

  • UPDATE: Rank adjusted stats for Nationalist and Royalist are up.
And as I was in a strange mood today, I whipped up a little toon.  For lack of a better place, I've tossed it in the Fan Fiction section.
